Mozart Trios for Strings (Study Score)
This study score contains all the works and fragments that Mozart wrote for a combination of three string instruments. The main body of the volume comprises the Divertimento in E-flat major for violin, viola and cello, written in September 1788 (K.563).
The title "Trios for Strings" singles out the one feature that all these works have in common: their scoring for three string instruments. Other than that, the pieces do not form anything remotely resembling a homogeneous group. On the contrary their conflicting scorings - some with two violins and bass (or cello), others with the "classical" trio setting of violin, viola and cello (or bass) - point to two quite separate generic strands in Mozart's oeuvre that happen to coincide in this tiny group of pieces and fragments.
