The commission for Mozart to compose another festive music, a serenade on the occasion of the ennoblement of Sigmund Haffner in Salzburg, was arranged by his father while Mozart was trying to profit also financially from the success of the Entführung in Vienna by “setting the harmony” – as was the taste of the time – the most popular pieces of the opera.  Although the commission came at an inconvenient time, Mozart did not want to refuse it for his father’s sake. 

The exchange of letters which followed between Mozart and his father indicate just how great the pressure was, but on August 7, 1782, the work was finished at last: “Enclosed is a short march. – I just hope everything will arrive on time – and meet your expectation. – The first Allegro should be played quite fiery. – The last, as fast as possible.”  His father must have been satisfied with the composition since Mozart wrote to him on
August 24, 1782: “I am very happy that the symphony is to your taste.”
