Mozart Symphony No.33 in B-flat major (K.319) (Full Score)

Like K.318 the Symphony in B-flat major K.319 has a heading in the composer’s hand, dated 9 July 1779.  Nothing is known about the circumstancesthat led to its composition.  Conceivably, besides everyday occasions at court, in church, or during domestic concerts, it may have been used by the “Böhm theatrical company”, an ensemble consisting of fifty actors, dancers, and singers under the direction of Johann Heinrich Böhm.

The Böhm troupe made its first guest appearances in Salzburg from late April to early June 1779.  It soon formed an acquaintance with the Mozarts and included works by Wolfgang in its repertory.  The troupe returned to Salzburg in early September of that same year.  Later, in Vienna, Mozart expanded the work’s original threemovement form (a local Salzburg tradition) to four movements by adding a minuet cum trio.  The scoring, with double oboes, bassoons, and horns, is less lavish than that of its predecessor.
