Schubert String Quartets I (Parts)
Except in the case of the separate Minuet D 86, the Schubert juvenilia appearing in this edition were newly edited on the basis of sets of parts written out by Schubert himself. We doubtless owe the existence of these sources to the circumstances of the works' origin: at the very least the Overture, and probably the two quartets as well were
performed in the Schubert household by the composer with his father and brothers. Schubert's brother Ferdinand, the first violinist of this illustrious ensemble (Schubert himself played the viola), carefully preserved the parts and scores of these early quartets and of the Overture which is expressly dedicated to him in its original quintet setting. Ferdinand did so against, or perhaps precisely because of, the wishes of the composer, who in later life spoke derogatively of his early essays in quartet writing.
