Johann Sebastian Bach composed for three different instrumental combinations in trio sonata form: sonatas for two instruments and basso continuo, sonatas for one instrument with harpsichord obbligato and three-part sonatas for organ.

This Sonata in D minor for tenor recorder and harpsichord is based upon Waltraut and Gerhard Kirchner's version of the Trio sonata for organ BWV 527 for flute and harpsichord*.
