Six Sonatas for Viola da gamba or Violin and Basso continuo Book 1: Nos. 3,4,6
Abel Six Sonatas for Viola da gamba or Violin and Basso continuo Book 1: Nos. 3,4,6
These sonatas for viola da gamba by Carl Friedrich Abel (1723–1787) are taken from the collection “Six / EASY SONATTAS / for the / HARPSICHORD / or for / A VIOLA DA GAMBA / VIOLIN OR GERMAN FLUTE / with a / Thorough-Bass Accompaniment / Composed by / C. F. Abel” (A Amsterdam, chez J. J. Hummel), which was probably written after 1759.
The subtle melodic structure of these refreshing pieces will no doubt quickly endear them to gamba players. As indicated in the title by Abel, the sonatas can also be played on the violin or flute; in accordance with the practice of the time one can of course also make use of other instruments, for example the oboe.
