Composed in 1996 "Cammina cammina" is based on poems by Giuseppe Ungaretti and scored for mezzo-soprano, viola and theorbo.
Andrea Lorenzo Scartazzini was born in Basel in 1971, where he studied German and Italian language and literature from 1990-97. He also studied composition with Rudolf Kelterborn at the Musikhochschule, Basel from 1994-97 and with Wolfgang Rihm in Karlsruhe from 1998-2000 as well as at the Royal Academy of Music, London. He has received numerous prizes including the Jakob Burckhardt Prize from the Johann Wolfgang von Goethe Foundation, Basel in 1998, the Study Prize from the Kiefer Hablitzel Foundation, Bern in 1999, the Supportive Prize from the Alexander Clavel Foundation, Riehen and the Study Prize from the Ernst von Siemens Music Foundation, Munich in 2000. In 2004-05 he was the autumn composer-in-residence at the University of Witten/Herdecke. His opera WUT was premiered at the Erfurt Theatre in 2006. In 2011 he received a scholarship for a study leave at Swatch Art Peace Hotel in Shanghai, in 2012 he was awarded a scholarship from the Internationales Künstlerhaus Villa Concordia of the State of Bavaria.
